Description

"On the obverse of any crucifix there must present the image of Jesus Christ. After all, it was the incarnation of Christ andHis sacrificial death that transformed the cross from an instrument of shameful and agonizing death into the instrument of salvation and eternal life. In this cross the Lord presents on both sides. Symbolically —on one, as the cross of Calvary, obviously —on the other, as the Lord Almighty. Therefore, this cross can be worn on any side.

Let’s consider the side with the image of the Calvary cross. The word ""Calvary"" means “hill”, round like a skull. Christian theology bound Calvary to the skull of Adam, buriedthere according to legend, therefore the skull is often portrayed in the crossbase. The Calvary cross is the main symbol of Orthodoxy. The richness of its framing, luxury adornment in many works of religious art does not reflect the historical truth, but symbolizes the attitude that had developed in the Orthodox Church. For the Church Calvary and the Christ’sCross are the precious treasures, more valuable than all the riches of the world. In Orthodoxy, the image of the cross testifies not only the Lord’ssuffering, but also the joy of Easter; it recalls that the Christ’s Cross connected heaven and earth, unitedGod and human being. The letters surrounding the cross are the initials of the Lord’sholy name, on the top, on a short crossbeam there being a titleИНЦИ, or sometimes Latin INRI(IesusNazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, orJesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews). Title is a tablet with ""guilt"", for which Jesus Christwas executed.

On either side of Calvary there are placed the icons ofthe most revered Russian saints — of St. Sergius of Radonezh and of St.Nicholas the Wonderworker. They are often invoked by believers who seek intercession and help. Saints lived at different time and in different countries. St. Nicholas comes from Asia Minor. He was bishop of the Byzantine province of Lycia in the 3th-4thcentury. St. Sergius lived in the 14thcentury near Moscow where founded the Monastery of the Holy Trinityin the wild forests of Radonezh. St. Sergius of Radonezh andSt. Nicholasjoin in infinite love for God and sacrificial compassionate love for people. This love consecrated their lives, their spiritual ministration, resulting in their God-given extraordinary miracle-working power. Therefore, believers call them ""wonder-workers"" and ""loving advocates and intercessors before God.""

On the other side of the cross on the top we see the image of the Lord Almighty and before standing Mother of God, who is worshiped by the archangels Michael and Gabriel. The icon of Our Lady, holding Herhands to the Lord in praying is called the ""Unbreakable Wall"". The epithet is borrowed from the Akathistus to the Mother of God, where Sheis named ""the unbreakable wallof thekingdom."" The foretype of the wonder working icon is a huge mosaic image of the Virgin Orans (Oranta) from the apse of the ancient Russian cathedral —of Kiev Sofia. Kievand its main temple underwentalot of trouble and destruction from various enemies. But the majestic image of Our Lady remained intactfor thousand years, protecting all who resorted to it for help.In the 19thcentury copies of the image became famous for miracles. Since then the icon of the Virgin raising highly Her opened hands became one of the most precious and popular among the people. Amazing power comes from the ""Unbreakable Wall""icon. Blessed Virgin as if stands in the way of the world evil and stops it with Her Most Pure hands. Good Mediatressof Christians is praying for the Christian world, begging the Lord for every human being. She is our defender against all disasters, all attacks of enemies and evil spirits, strong Lady of fervent prayer and Intercessor before God. The ""Unbreakable Wall"" icon is commemorated on May 31\June 12,and on the Sunday of All Saints."
