Description

"St. Artemius (Artemon) was born, and spent his life in Pisidian Seleucia in Asia Minor. Seleucia was not far from Antioch where Paul the Apostle preached together with Barnabas the Apostle, one of the Seventy Disciples, from 43 till 46. Therefore it might be in Seleucia wherefrom St. Paul started his first apostolic journey that he was given so hearty welcome. The Apostle’s words fell on fertile ground, and a first Christian community was created in Seleucia. That happened 13 years after Crucifixion and Ascension of Christ. The Good News had just recently started spreading over the world, and apostles needed to move on. But they could not leave Seleucia without an integrous head of the fresh community. Paul’s choice lied on Artemius. Pious and wise, Artemius with all his heart received the Good News from the mouth of the great Apostle.  He was righteous person, highly respected in his town. Therefore St. Paul the Apostle considered St. Artemius the most deserving, and appointed him the first bishop of Seleucia. St. Artemius gave sage guidance to the flock entrusted to him, and gained the reputation of protector of the poor and the persecuted. A salvation abode for the afflicted; a fiduciary for widows and orphans; wonder making healer of soul and body for everyone — so he was called in his Legend. St. Artemius deceased in extreme age.

That is all known about this person. The town where St. Artemius has lived is no more. In 1205 Turks ransacked and destroyed Seleucia, it having never restored whereupon.

Only very old and short legends of the saint’s life have come down to us from the Greek Church calendar. In medieval Russia St. Artemius had also been well known and worshipped since extreme antiquity. The day of his commemoration — March 24 —had been already observed in one of the most ancient Russian manuscripts: in the Menologion of the Mstislav Gospel, written in the end of 11th-beginning of 12th centuries."
