Description

"On the icon obverse we see a dove — the symbol of the Holy Ghost — sitting on the throne. The Holy Ghost is the Holy Trinity part that the Fathers of the Church figuratively compare to the God’s Breath. According to this metaphor God the Father is the God’s mind, God the Son being the God’s Word and the Holy Ghost being the breath, without which thoughts cannot be put into words. God the Father revealed Himself to people in the Old Testament: prophets heard His commandments. God the Son — God’s Word — was incarnated in Jesus Christ’s person: His life and teachings are narrated in the Gospel that became law for all Christians. After the Ascension of Jesus Christ the Holy Ghost has descended to earth and thus far remains with the people constantly. “Paraclete” as Gospel calls the Holy Ghost (Jn. 14:16), is giver of Grace, that is, of the God’s gifts to a human being; of the saving power of God, by which performed are all miracles on the earth. By Grace the Church on the whole and every person has fellowship of the God in the Holy Ghost in entirety of Him. Therefore, it is customary with Christians to call down the Holy Ghost Grace before every work: ""God bless…"" — often ask even unbelievers. Stubborn and willful rejection of God's saving grace is called blasphemy against the Holy Ghost and is a deadly sin.

The Holy Ghost has no shape. Dove is just a symbol. The Holy Ghost was not corporified into dove but simply once appeared as it during baptism of Jesus Christ (Jn.1:32). But even in early Christian Church the dove figure symbolized presence of the Holy Ghost, white or silver light emanation being a process of Grace given by it.

Why did the Holy Ghost choose just a dove as the way of His appearance? The thing is that in antiquity dove was an understandable and close symbol for everyone. Even in pre-Christian times, it was worshiped as a messenger of spiritual world. Doves were often raised at pagan temples and were considered sacred birds. It was a dove that Noah released from the ark window after the Flood, and it returned with an olive branch in its beak, indicating reconciliation with God. Since those times white dove became an emblem of peace, fidelity and love.

On the icon reverse a prayer to the Holy Ghost is written: O, Most Holy Ghost, save and protect me.

The image was assiduously created by Olga Pikovskaya, the artist, and team members of the “Akimov” Company."
