Description

"On one side of a double-faced small icon looking like an oval locket we see the Igorevskaya Icon of the Mother of God. This wonder working icon is worshipped in the Orthodoxy as the quick helper in great distresses, the consoler in sorrows.

On the icon the Mother of God and Christ child hug one another tenderly. The icon shows only the holy faces of Mother and Son whereto all the attention is directed. The Son looks at the Mother as if wishing to console Her, She being full of grief and turning Her mournful eyes into Herself. That is a minor version of a favorite Russian iconography ""Eleusa"" (Tenderness). In Greek the means not only tenderness but distress, heartfelt regret, love. It was that doleful love, which filled the life of the Mother of God, who knew of future sufferings of Her son. The death of martyrs was as well in store for thousands of His followers. Igor, Prince of Chernigov was one of such Christ’s sufferers. That icon was the favorite image of the monk-prince. From great antiquity it stayed in the Dormition Cathedral of Kiev Pechersk Lavra, where he kept praying. The saint spent his last hours before it as well. It is in remembrance of him that the Igorevskaya Icon of the Mother of God got its name. The other side of the locket shows us the image of the holy passion bearer.

In 1147 the holy Prince appeared to be a guiltless victim of feudal discord, and by his death of a martyr he expiated the ancestral sin of internecine wars. Igor was called up from Chernigov for reign after his insolent elder brother Vsevolod. But he ruled only for two weeks. For the hatred of Vsevolod Igor was discrowned whereupon he took monastic vows and took up his residence in Kiev Pechersk Lavra. The year after revolting crowd pounced upon the monk-prince straight during the liturgy, dragged him out and tore him to pieces. The Prince of Kiev Vladimir tried to protect his cousin but had a narrow escape himself. Next day the remains of the holy Prince were brought to the church, and here “God showed a great sign, all candles in that church lit up suddenly”. The people realized that they killed a holy God-pleaser, repented, and started honoring his memory and worshipping the icon he prayed before being killed.

The Igorevskaya Icon of the Mother of God is commemorated on June 5(18). The most orthodox Prince St. Igor of Chernigov is remembered in liturgies on October 2 (September 19)."
