Description

"A small locket with icon of St. Boris on the obverse and image of Guardian Angle on the reverse is round-shaped. Circle is the symbol of eternity, of Heaven and of God, the sign of God praised saints abiding with Him in eternity at Heaven.

St. Boris (christened Roman) is one of twelve sons of Grand Prince St. Vladimir, Equal-to-the-Apls, and Baptizer of Russia. Boris and his brother Gleb were given birth to by Bulgarian Christian woman, and both were brought up as a Christians from childhood. When the brothers grew up father allotted them adjacent principalities — Rostov and Murom. The fame of virtue, mercy and meakness of young princes, as well as of their becoming innocent murder victims reached us in the “Legend” by Nestor the Chronicler.

Boris was a courageous warrior and ailing old Grand Prince Vladimir placed him at the head of troops when inhabitants of steppe attack Russia. Young prince returned to Kiev in triumph but grave news waited for him there: his father, Grand Prince deceased. “You, my elder brother, be a father for me” – He sent a bow to Svyatopolk who was Vladimir’s son from another wife. But not without reason common people called this prince “Accursed”. In all the relatives he saw rivals in his claim on the grand-ducal throne. And in the first place he hated the beloved children of Vladimir, Boris and Gleb. That is why he sent assassins first to Boris, and then to Gleb. Young princes knew what Svyatopolk contemplates but refused to enter into push for power, and to raise the hand against brother. And according to Nestor, they were killed “like lambs”.

Then Yaroslav the Wise with his command leaved Novgorod stopped on the river Alta where Boris was martyrized, and invoked God's blessing, saying that brother’s blood calls upon him. Svyatopolk took to flight, strayed for a long time, and according to legend as a result went to seed so that even his grave let out unbearable stench. Image of meek princes symbolizing innocent suffering of Christ impressed forever in the heart of Russian people.

After death humble princes became powerful defenders of Fatherland, the warriors of Christ's host. They were seen coming in the boat to aid of St. Alexander Nevski when he prepared to the battle with Swedes. They were as well seen both on the Kulikovo Field, and on the Kursk Bulge. Common people were helped by saint brothers a great deal. “Neither mind is able to grasp all their wonders, nor the tongue – to put them into words” – Their life story tells.

St. Boris and Gleb are commemorated on May 15 (2), August 6 (July 24), September 18 (5)."
