Description

"St. Maximus the Confessor was born about 580 in Constantinople to a pious Christian family. He got splendid classical education, and due to his talents made a rapid career at the court of the Emperor Heraclius as First Secretary thereof.  However, in his heyday St. Maximus left the court and retired to the Monastery of Chrisopolis where took the monastic vows, and soon became the hegumen-abbot. At that time Church was threatened by a heresy of Monothelitism, and St. Maximus became the center around which a vehement strife of the heresy with the Orthodoxy flared up. Heresy committed Constantinople emperors and patriarchs persecuted St. Maximus the Confessor fiercely, seeing that he is alone to stand in their way to the victory over the Orthodoxy. Eventually his tongue was cut, his right hand was truncated, and himself was exiled to Colchis (Caucasus).

St. Maximus deceased on August 13, 662. His relics were taken to Constantinople, where his grave soon became a worshipped place. Every night three lampads began miraculously to burn, and everyone coming there at the hour was healed.

St. Maximus the Confessor is one of the most outstanding Orthodox theologians. Commemorated is on February 3 (January 21)."
