Description

"A cross sprouting with grapevine is the eldest liturgical symbol of Christian Church.  ""I am the vine; – Jesus Christ said to His disciples – you the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit” (John 15, 5). ""I AM the true vine; and my Father is the husbandman"" (John 15,1).

During the Last Supper, His last meal shared with His disciples the Lord blessed bread and wine and gave them to the Apostles, saying: “Take ye, and eat. This is my body”; and “This is my blood of the new testament, which shall be shed for many unto remission of sins” (Mth. 26, 26–28). Thus the sacrament of communion (or the Eucharist, in Greek) was instituted. Since then specially prepared bread and wine are consecrated and offered to God with an appeal for the Holy Spirit to descend on them and turned bread into the Christ’s body, and the wine – into His blood. In the guise of bread and wine Christians partakes of the precious and holy Body and Blood of the Lord.

Everyone considering oneself a Christian must take part in the sacrament of communion. He (she) thus administers the will of the Lord about a human being. “He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath everlasting life: and I will raise him up in the last day” (John 6, 55). “By His immeasurable love the Lord saved us substituting His execution for our ones; substituting His most holy virtue for our profane ones. By the same immeasurable love that instituted wonderful order and system He invites us into the closest union with Him, into administration of the Holy Communion as to the most true and indispensable condition of our salvation” – the sainted hierarch Ignatius Bryanchaninov.

Being a Christian means to accept all the Gifts that Christ has brought to people. Christ is not a preacher who comes to narrate several parables, teaches us this, that and the other, and goes away. Christ is the Savior. He is looking for everyone being protected and saved; and salvation that He brings goes through His Self-Sacrificing Cross. The Cross of Christ sprouting with grapevine is a mystical image of the most significant Church Sacrament – of Holy Eucharist.

“O God, be merciful to me, a sinner, and save me” – is written on the reverse."
