Description

"The saints portrayed on this next-to-skin cross will give help in intellectual enlightenment to everyone who strives for new knowledge.

Near to a high eight-ended cross on the obverse we see the Holy brothers Cyril and Methodius, Equal-to-the-Apostles, prime teachers and enlighteners of Slavs, the Orthodox gospellers, and creators of Slavonic alphabet.

The Holy brothers were not only the ABC creators, but the founders of spiritual and scientific literature in Slavonic language. They translated the principal prayer books from Greek, wrote first literary works. St. Cyril wrote first poetical (“Proglas”) and religio-philosophical (“Scripture on the True Faith”) in Slavonic. St. Methodius created the eldest monument of Slavonic law – “Legal Law for People”.

“The soul having no letters is dead in a human being”– that sentence by St. Cyril became a catchphrase, since it is education, enlightenment that are able to lend wings to a human soul and to save it for Eternity.

To the right and to the left of the Holy brothers there are the icons of St. Nicholas and of Venerable Romanus, the Melodist.

Through prayerful intercession of St. Nicholas the Lord helps people in various troubles, even in desperate situations. It is no accident that the Holy Hierarch is called “quick helper” in all affairs. He can as well help in studies and at the exams.

Venerable Romanus, the Melodist assists everyone who turns to his help in realization of creative daring. He was a clergyman in St. Sophia Cathedral of Constantinople, and dreamed of making verses and singing at choral services, and reading the Psalter expressively. Through his praying to the Most Holy Mother of God he acquired the longed-for gift, and resounded for ages as one of the greatest Church hynmwriters and poets.

In the center of the cross reverse there is the Icon of the Mother of God ""Quick to Hearken"". The image name itself indicates of the Mother of God being “quick in responding to everyone who applies to her help and in giving mercies and complying with requests”. On the icon the right hand of the Mother of God is deliberately large-sized as if symbolizing lavish generosity of Her help.

To the right and to the left of Her St. Sergius of Radonezh and St. John of Kronstadt intercede, correspondingly. In their life stories there are similar situations: it was difficult for both to study. And both miraculously acquired great talent for sciences after wrestling with God, and became spiritual enlighteners of the world.

In the cross root we see St. Matrona of Moscow. Being a rustic cripple born blind she had so deep God-sent knowledge that amazed well-educated persons who spoke to her. But as a real zealot of godliness the blessed woman taught not verbally but by all her life. Being blind bodily she still keeps teaching us spiritual eyesight; with her legs palsied she teaches going a difficult way of salvation.

The cross top is overshadowed by the wings of the Guardian Angel. His image is put above all the other saints since he is the primary friend and assistant of every person, the God-given adviser and intercessor.

A human being needs God helping not only in troubles and diseases. The Church teaches us to ask the Lord for intellectual enlightenment, for deliverance from thoughtlessness, absent-mindedness and idleness. And it also teaches us to be never forgetful of thanking for all the mercies, saying: “Thank God!”"
