"On the small icon the Archangel Michael is portrayed to ride a winged steed, and to blow the horn. That is an impressive image of the Russian icon-painting wherein the Archangel Michael is represented as the captain convening the heavenly host to combat the evil's forces. The Archangel Michael is the Supreme Angel taking an active part in the Church destiny; “the standard-bearer of Christ”.  In Hebraic his name means “Who is like God?” The icon with the image of the powerful Archangel has a cross shape of that symbolically indicates his peculiar intimacy with God. However this small icon cannot replace a next-to-the-skin cross, as well as the image of the Archangel Michael cannot replace that of Jesus Christ. The obverse of a Christian cross should invariably show either the image of the Savior Himself, or His symbolical representation: Calvary, Christogram (initials of Christ written specifically), eight-ended cross.

The Christian Church honors the Archangel Michael as the defender of the faith, as the fighter against heresies and all kinds of evil. He is prayed to for the deceased, for fighters in the war, for those being in difficulties, and just for strays. “O, Archangel Michael, shelter me with cover of your wings” – is written in the small icon reverse. At the beginning of the 4th century the Church instituted a feast of the Synaxis of St. Michael the Archangel and the Angelic Hosts. It is celebrated on November 21\8."
