Description

The icon depicts Saint Prince Vladimir - the greatest personality in Russian history, the Baptist of Russia.

Prince Vladimir was born around 960. Before his death, his father divided the Russian land between his three sons. Vladimir reigned in Novgorod, and the first years of his reign was an ardent pagan. He seized the lands of the brothers and became the sole ruler of the entire Kiev state. The course of Russian history changed in 988: then Vladimir concluded an agreement with Byzantium, pledging to send military aid in exchange for the hand of Princess Anne, the sister of the Byzantine emperor. Before the marriage, the prince made a promise to be baptized. However, when help was sent, the Greeks were in no hurry to fulfill their part of the agreement. The enraged prince Vladimir captured the city of Korsun - the stronghold of the Byzantine Empire on the Black Sea. The bride arrived in Korsun 8 days later. Here, Prince Vladimir was baptized, and the young were married. Now this place is called Chersonesos and is located in Sevastopol in the Crimea, being a large open-air museum of ancient Greek culture.

A great warrior and politician, Vladimir forced the mighty Byzantine kings to talk to him on equal terms, and accepted the faith from them not as a vassal, but as an ally and relative. Together with the Byzantine princess, scribes, architects, artists came to Russia, and soon the Russian land, united by the imperious hand of her baptist, became a great enlightened state. Before the adoption of Christianity in Russia, human sacrifice was widespread, cruelty, polygamy reigned, the soul of the pagan Slavs did not develop, enslaved by the cult of rough corporeality. The pagans did not even think about the individuality, uniqueness of each person. Christianity brought to Russia all those humanistic ideals that we now call the main ones for human culture: love for one's neighbor and understanding of the pricelessness of every human life. Baptism made Russia a part of the Christian world, opened the way for development and cooperation with the family of European and South Slavic peoples.

The icon depicts the holy Baptist of Russia dressed in solemn princely clothes. In his right hand, Vladimir holds a cross, in his left hand he has a scroll with a prayer: "God, look upon your field." Niva is a symbol of the Russian land, into the fertile soil of which the seeds of the Gospel teaching fell. The holy prince prays to God that He would not let the shoots of enlightenment perish, sprinkle the shoots of the Christian faith with grace. Behind Vladimir's back, the Golden Gate of Kiev is depicted - one of the oldest buildings in Christian Russia. Around the image on the side there is a signature: "Saint Vladimir Equal to the Apostles, the Russian Enlightener of the Powers". On the back of the icon is the image of the Korsun cross, which is worshiped by the Archangels. Prayer over the cross: "Thou art my protection, the Cross of Christ." According to legend, it is such a cross of St. Vladimir set up on the banks of the Dnieper when he called the people of Kiev to be baptized in its waters. This cross has become a symbol of the Baptism of Rus.

Prince Vladimir died in 1015, several decades before the split of the Christian Church in 1054, so he is revered not only by Orthodox, but also by Catholics. The Russian Church commemorates him on the day of his repose - July 15 (July 28, new style), and Catholics - July 28. Since 2002, the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Duke Vladimir has been considered the heavenly patron of the internal troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

The artist Alexander Malyshev and the creative team of employees of the Akimov company worked on the creation of the image.
