Description

"The Most Holy Mother of God icon called “Seven Arrows” was created by prophecy of St. Simon the God receiver (Theodochos). As the Evangelist Luke narrates, Simeon was foretold by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah, the Savior of mankind. Holy elder lived 360 years in anticipation of the prophecy fulfillment. And here, on the fortieth day after the Nativity the Blessed Virgin and St. Joseph brought the Infant Christ to the Temple of Jerusalem. Simeon met them on the threshold of the temple. By inspiration from above in the Infant he recognized Christ the Savior born into the world. He took the Infant in his arms and predicted speedy death of himself: ""Now Thou dost dismiss Thy servant, O Lord, according to Thy word in peace..."", - he said. Then St. Simeon prophetically said: ""Behold this child is set for the fall and for the resurrection of many in Israel and for a sign which shall be contradicted."" And such were his words to the Most Holy Virgin Mary: “And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts thoughts may be revealed.” (Lc. 2, 34-35). By “sword” the holy Elder meant sufferings and sorrows that were on plate of the Virgin Mary. She, indeed, gave birth to an Infant Who had to accomplish the Atonement and restore unity with God. This event — the Holy Family meeting with St. Simeon the Elder in Temple of Jerusalem — is commemorate by Church as Candlemas.

On Mother of God Icon of “Seven Arrows” the Most Holy Virgin is symbolically imaged as pierced with seven arrows. When the Body of crucified Christ was pierced by nails and spear, the soul of the Most Blessed Mother of God was struck by the ""sword"" of sadness and heartache. According to the teachings of the Orthodox Church, the Lord was crucified not only for human past sins. Mystically Jesus Christ is crucified again at the everyday liturgy for new sins of all living. Therefore seven arrows also symbolize seven deadly sins bringing new sorrows to the Mother of God.

In the Orthodox Church, beside the ""Seven Arrows"" there exist two more icons of a similar iconography: “Softener of Evil Hearts” and «Simeon’s Prophecy."" Their difference is: on one there are swords arrows instead arrows and on the other they are arranged differently — four on one and three on the other side. However, in the practice of prayer no distinctions are made between the three icons, since all of them belong to the same iconographic type.

The Most Holy Mother of God in Her wonder working icon ""Seven Arrows"" is worshipped as quieter of hostility, defender from ill will. The image is offered up prayers by mothers wishing to protect their children from malevolent people and the evil spirit. It is appealed for intestine strife to be stopped, for enemy hearts to be propitiated, as well as evil thoughts and hostile feelings to be overcome in one`s own heart. Everyone resorting to this icon with a prayer feel that heart softening results in alleviation of not only mental but also of bodily suffering. And if you pray for your enemies in front of this image, hostile feelings make way for clemency, the mordant hatred abating. Indeed, the Mother of God forgives everyone who crucifies Her Son and prays for sinners relentlessly beside His Divine throne.

“O you, Holy Mother of God, deliver me from woes, and from devil attacks, and from any evil, and sinful sore” — is written on the reverse of the small icon.

The icon ""Seven Arrows"" is commemorated on August 26 (13). “Softener of Evil Hearts” is celebrated on All Saints Sunday (next after Trinity).

The image was assiduously created by Olga Pikovskaya, the artist, and team members of the “Akimov” Company."
