"The small icon shows the Most Holy Mother of God and St. John the Precurser, the Baptist of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. Bowing, they appeal to enthroned Jesus Christ and stretch their hands to Him in a pleading gesture. That is one of the most widespread iconographies in the Eastern Orthodoxy. It is called “Deesis”, i.e. “supplication”. Put on a small icon Deesis is an image of the praying of the Mother of God and St. John the Baptist for a person wearing the locket.
«Deisis»Jesus Christ is always portrayed in Deesis as the Sovereign Lord, i.e. as the Lord of earth and heavens. In His hand He is holding the book being the great Domesday Book and the symbol of New Testament. The Testament is an agreement between God and people; according to which God will judge people at the day of the Atonement in the end of the age. The basic law (the commandment) of the Testament is the commandment of love: «That you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another” (Jn.13; 34).
It is that commandment that Apostle John spoke about to the disciples: “If only it could be fulfilled, that would do the job”. The world will change after the Doomsday. “There shall not enter into it any thing defiled or that worketh abomination or maketh a lie: but they that are written in the book of life of the Lamb” (Rev. 21; 27).
The Mother of God and St. John the Baptist as being the nearest – even nearer than angels and archangels – to the throne of God will be the principal intercessors of the mankind. They are the foremost assistants and defenders of a person on the earth as well. Therefore they are invoked by every believer for spiritual help. Such a prayer-petition is also put on the small icon: “O Lord, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, by the prayers of Thy most honorable Mother and Your Precurser and Baptist, have mercy on me”.
The icon reverse is decorated with foliation with birds sitting on the sprouts. That allegorizes human souls inhabiting the Garden of Eden. Such a symbol has appeared in the Epichristian time and is for centuries remaining one of the most widespread ornamental motifs for the Church."
