"Elegant silver spoon is decorated with gold vine ornament. It is an ancient Christian symbol. ""I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman"" (Jn. 15: 1.) – so the world’s Savior called Himself. ""I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit"" (Jn. 15: 5.).
The branches cannot live without vines and cannot fructify themselves. But if we abide in God, if branches are fed with Vine blood, then the harvest is rich. Especially symbolic is that for His Church Christ chose red grape wine as substance of Holy Blood. In this case, the metaphor with Vine becomes very specific: one needs to commune as often as possible, to abide in Him through the Sacrament of the Eucharist, that our branch lived.
On the inner side of the chamber there is placed chrism – another ancient symbol of the Christianity. That is a Christogram consisting of crossed Greek letters X (chi) and R (rho) – the initial letters of Christ’s name. To the left and right of them placed is Alpha and Omega – the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. The Lord speaks of Himself: “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, saith the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” (Rev. 1:8).
The chamber reverse is adorned with first words of after-meal thanksgiving prayer: ""We thank Thee, o Christ our God, that Thou hast satisfied us with Thine earthly gifts."" With these words we appreciate God’s care of us; we thank Him that He nourishes His creatures with earthly blessings. Also in this prayer we ask Christ not to deprive us of His Kingdom of Heaven that is salvation.
The handle pommel is crowned with the image of the bloomed cross. It symbolically represents Christ Himself, who by His suffering and death on the Cross made it the source of life and immortality. Through the Cross Eternal Life came into the world. Therefore, the Holy Cross is metaphorically called the Tree of Life, and is often decorated with floral sprigs and various ornaments. In this case the vine-type ornament that completely entwines the spoon serves a symbolic continuation of the Bloomed Cross image.
The spoon is 11 cm in length, and 44 g for a weight. This spoon will be a wonderful gift on a baby’s baptismal day. Indeed, in Rus’ a spoon had always symbolized prosperity and abundance. Therefore popular are traditional wishes: “Dip up ladleful from life!”, “Live with the red spoon!” (Indulge in every pleasure).
The image was assiduously created by German Pozharskiy, the artist, and team members of the “Akimov” Company."
