Description

"St. Faith lived in Italy and suffered in Rome together with her mother Sophia and sisters Charity and Hope. In 137 when Faith took the crown of martyrdom, she was twelve years old.

The sisters were brought up by their mother in Christian devoutness. Sophia was a widow and devoted her time to the daughters evangelizing them and edifying in devotion to God. The family lived openly never concealing their Christian confession that being equivalent to a crime in Rome of heathens. By order of the Emperor Hadrian the devout family was taken to the palace. By means of abundant presents and promises of comfortable and happy life in the palace the Emperor tried to seduce them out of Christian way and to make worshipping Artemis. But nothing could tempt the girls – they were strong in their Christianity. Then the Emperor ordered Sophia’s daughters being subjected to brutal tortures. Faith was first to be butchered and executed, setting an example of steadfast and unshakeable belief. After superhuman torments the girl was decapitated. Next tortured and executed were the other two daughters of Sophia.

The children bodies were given to the mother who buried them into a high hill. She stayed by the grave for three days until reposing in the Lord. The believers buried her together with the daughters. St. Sophia was consecrated a martyr because she as well suffered for Christ if not bodily, but in her heart. She donated persons that she held dearest of all – three virtuous daughters of her, Faith, Hope, and Charity – to the Most Holy Trinity.

For many centuries the believers keep remaining not indifferent to the deed of St. Faith, of her sisters and mother. Holy martyresses are loved and worshipped in all the Christendom. They are prayed for patience, steadfastness and courage in troubles, as well of course as for hope, faith and love.

Relics of the holy martyresses have at first been in Rome, staying in Alsace since 8th century. They are commemorated at September 30 (17)."
