Description

"St. Lyudmila († 927) was the first Czech duchess, who was converted to Christianity together with her husband Bořivoj, the Duke of Bohemia. Firstly together with her husband and later with her son Vratislav St. Lyudmila became a missionary and an imposer of the Christian faith in Czech lands. However heathenism was still alive among West Slavs, especially among Elbe (Polabian) Slavs wherefrom Drahomíra, Vratislav`s wife came. Drahomíra was not a sincere Christian and remained a pagan votary. She came to hate her mother-in-law and sent two noblemen to murder Lyudmila. The saint was strangled at Tetín while praying. The relics of St. Lyudmila were buried in Tetín at the town wall and soon wonderful healings and other signs began to happen there. Wenceslaus, the grandson of St. Lyudmila, ordered the grandmother`s body to be removed from Tetin to Prague and be buried it in the church of St. George.

St. Lyudmila is commemorated on September 16/29."
