Description

"In the center of the cross obverse there is the image of Christ Not-Made-by-Hand – one of the most venerated protection symbols in the Orthodoxy. Three-leafed beams of the cross radiate from the Savior’s severe expressive face. In-between there are put gold ornamental lilies – symbols of purity and humility. The cross beams together with lilies form a semblance of sunshine around the Lord’s Not-Made-by-Hand Face. As a part of the radiance standing are holy martyrs Elisabeth, Varvara, and passion bearer tsar Nicholas II extending their hands to Christ.

«Icon of Christ Not-Made-by-Hand. Holy Royal Martyr Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. «Igorevskaya Icon of the Mother of God»Holy righteous martyr Grand Duchess Elisabeth Feodorovna was married to Grand Duke Sergey Alexandrovich, the fifth son of the Emperor Alexander II. Sergey Alexandrovich was murdered by a bomb thrown by the terrorist Ivan Kalyaev on February 18 (5), 1905. After her husband decease Elisabeth Feodorovna on her own dime (avails of her jewelry) built a Convent of Mercy with monastery statute on Bol'shaya Ordynka and took the monastic vows. In the convent she arranged free hospital, canteen, and girl-asylum. The poor and people in need were also helped at the same place. Relatives proposed her leaving Russia after the revolution 1917 but she refuse saying: “I’d never hurt anybody. Shall it be God’s will!”

In 1918 the Duchess was arrested by Latvian riflemen. On July 18 (5) 1918 Elisabeth Feodorovna, her lay-sister and other members of the royal house were thrown into the dead pit and bombarded with grenades. Being pushed down into the mine by the executioners the Great Duchess prayed: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do!” (Lk. 23. 34). In 1921 remains of prioress of Saints Martha and Mary Convent and of her loyal lay-sister Varvara were transported to Jerusalem and put into the burial-vault of the church to St. Equal-to-Apostles Mary Magdalene in Gethsemane.

Holy Royal Martyr Tsar Nicholas II was shot together with his family in Ekaterinburg. The deed of Nicholas II is peculiar. He is more than a martyr – he is the killed anointed of the Lord, who did much for strengthening Orthodoxy in Russia, and revival of Orthodox principles of life. The Church glorified Nicholas II for Christian humility with which he took adversity God prepared for him.

These New-Martyrs are given a special place in Russian menologion. In adversity that fell to their lot – firstly absolute authority, a glut of wealth, and then indignities, derision, death anxiety – they maintained their human faces, their Christian dignity, they did betrayed neither God, nor Motherland and fellow creatures. During mass backslide they preferred Christ’s way of the Cross and joined the multitude of Christian martyrs. On the top of the cross obverse Calvary is represented as a symbol of their martyrdom.

The Igorevskaya icon of the Mother of God is put to the reverse center. It is named after the ancestor of the royal holy passion bearers, monk-prince Igor murdered by Kievers in rebellion. In 1147 the holy prince appeared to be a guiltless victim of feudal distemper and expiated the inherited princely sin of internecine wars. The Igorevskaya Icon of the Mother of God is commemorated on June 5(18)."
